What now?
First:
- Start prenatal vitamins (Most important is folic acid at least 1mg)
- Avoid alcohol, smoking, substances, etc
- Avoid over the counter medicine. Tylenol at recommended dosage is safe
- Contact the office for an early pregnancy confirmation visit. This can be done in person or on the phone with MD, NP or Nurse (6-10 weeks is ideal, sooner if need to discuss chronic meds or other concern)
Options for care:
- My office for monthly prenatal visits until 26 weeks and then transfer to obstetrician
- Midwife (The Barrie Midwives operate by self referrals from patients and can be reached at 705 727 7660 or barriemidwives.com, located at 1 Quarry Ridge road Barrie)
- Obstetrician for earlier pregnancy care if high risk
Tests and procedures:
- Initial comprehensive blood tests
- Early ultrasound and, if chosen, first trimester screening
- (eFTS, https://prenatalscreeningontario.ca)
- Comprehensive prenatal visit at 12 weeks gestation (complete history and physical exam)
- Regular prenatal visit every 4 weeks in office
- Ultrasound for fetal anatomy at 18-20 weeks gestation
- Transfer to obstetrician between 24-28 weeks
Other:
- If minor spotting in early pregnancy, no pain/severe cramps /clots, contact the office.
- If you have heavier bleeding with cramps/pain/clots, go to the ER.
- Regular exercise is ok. Avoid vigorous training and overheating.
- Prescription for Diclectin can be done for nausea
